AI for Work

Anthropic unifies Claude chat and Cowork into a single product

Anthropic is merging Claude Cowork and standard Claude chat into a single unified experience, eliminating the need for users to choose where tasks belong. The update also introduces Claude Docs, positioning Anthropic against AI productivity suites like Google's workplace tools. Rolling out first to Pro and Max subscribers, the unified Claude handles tasks from any conversation, with Claude Design remaining available as a standalone product.

If you're a Claude user who has been juggling between the standard chat and the more capable Cowork tool, Anthropic just simplified your life — whether you wanted it or not. The company is merging Claude Cowork and regular chat into one unified Claude experience, and it's also introducing a brand-new feature called Claude Docs. Here's what's changing, why it matters, and what to expect if you're on a paid plan.

One Claude to rule them all

For anyone who grew fond of the original, more limited Claude chat window, there's a bit of unwelcome news: Anthropic is folding Cowork's capabilities directly into the main Claude interface. The result is a single, all-encompassing Claude — and according to the company, there's essentially nothing it can't handle anymore.

"You don't have to choose where a task goes. Claude does more of the work," Anthropic explained in its announcement. The rollout also covers Artifacts and begins with Pro and Max subscribers over the coming weeks, with additional plans to follow later.

Say hello to Claude Docs

Baked into this upgraded, all-in-one Claude is the newly launched Claude Docs, a move that puts Anthropic in more direct competition with AI-first productivity suites — essentially positioning itself as a challenger to Google's workplace tools. OpenAI sparked rumors last summer about pursuing a similar direction, though the current status of those plans remains unclear.

Within the new unified workspace, users can also tap into Claude Design to create presentations. According to Anthropic, you can "present straight from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF." Docs, Slides, and Design are currently in beta for paid subscribers.

Why merge the two tools in the first place?

To understand the reasoning, it helps to look at Cowork's history. Anthropic introduced Cowork in January as a general-purpose answer to Claude Code — a productivity agent built for heavy-duty tasks beyond programming. By July, the company had moved Cowork to the cloud after discovering that the vast majority of how people used it had nothing to do with coding.

With agentic features increasingly in demand across the board, keeping a separate Cowork product started to feel redundant.

"We built Cowork as a separate place for bigger work, and Design for visual work. People used both, and told us the frustrating part was deciding where a task belonged," Anthropic said. "Claude can now figure out what a task needs, so what Cowork and Design can do is available from any conversation, with the context, skills, and connectors you already have."

A simpler way to work

The practical upshot is that every tool now lives behind a single entry point. Think of them as different modes inside one interface, rather than separate apps that can't smoothly hand off work to each other. The aim appears to be straightforward simplicity: one central home for your projects — and now, the documents Claude creates.

"Anything you make with Claude Design, Slides, or Docs lives at one shareable link you can open on your phone," Anthropic noted.

And if none of this sounds appealing? There's no need to worry. Claude Design will continue to work as a standalone product, just as it always has. And for users who stick with plain chat rather than Cowork, Anthropic says the experience should remain unchanged.
